How do I get a private investigators licence in Tasmania?

The Security and Investigations Agents Act 2002 (the Act) and the Security and Investigations Agents Regulations 2002 (the Regulations) form the framework for the registration of licenses in Tasmania. Private Agents licenses administered by Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading.

Licences

Licences are issued for security, crowd control, inquiry agents and commercial agent or commercial sub-agents. Activities of an Inquiry Agent include:

•obtaining or providing information with respect to (i) the personal character or action of any person; or (ii) the business or occupation of any person,

•obtaining evidence for the purpose of legal proceedings, or

•searching for missing persons.

Training requirements and restrictions.

There is no prerequisite training. This means you can obtain a licence and commence as an Inquiry Agent in Tasmania without entry-level training. However, all newly licenced operators will only be eligible for a Provisional licence. Unlike NSW there is no restriction on your activities under a provisional Licence. However relevant training and educational requirements must be met within 12 months for your licence to ‘mature’ to fill unrestricted licence. Your provisional licence will not be extended if you do not complete the required training within the 12 month period.
